NCEAS co-sponsored the Environmental Information Management 2008 conference Sep. 10-11, 2008 at the University of New Mexico.  Over 100 ecologists, technologists, and computer scientists met to discuss the management of environmental data.  Contributed oral paper tracks covered "Sensors and Sensor Networks", "Metadata and Data Management Systems", "Data Integration, Analysis, and Visualization", and "Quality Assurance Systems".  Dr. James Clark, the first keynote speaker, addressed the use of Bayesian models to improve the communication efficiency of limited-power sensor networks, and Dr. Tony Beasley, the second keynote speaker, provided an overview of the cyberinfrastructure for the nascent National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON).  The conference also featured two discussion panels, one on challenges associated with sensor data and the other on data and metadata system interoperability.  The peer-reviewed proceedings were edited by Corinna Gries (ASU) and Matthew Jones (NCEAS, UCSB).
